AXIOS! Metropolitan Antony Begins 50th Year of Priestly Service in the UOC of the USA!

The magnitude of any event is reflected in its participation.  Today, we had an opportunity to be participants in a great Feast Day celebration in the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.  On this day, as we celebrate and honor Saint John Chrysostom, our Church celebrates an additional special event – the 49th anniversary of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora’s ordination into the Holy Priesthood.  It is of great significance that these two events coincide, for upon reviewing the life and works of this great saint and hierarch, we see the importance of personal efforts and achievement in everyday life, as well as within the Church.

Parish life is closely interwoven with the relationship between a priest and his congregation.  The success of the parish, and its very life, depend on the quality of this relationship.  For the priest, his flock is his family, for whom he cares deeply.  For the parishioners, the priest is an example to follow, a counselor to turn to, and a spiritual shepherd. The main aspect of this relationship is a responsibility one for the other.  This relationship epitomizes the Christian life, as the parish becomes the Church of the Living God, the Body of Jesus Christ.  This same principle exists in the lives of the clergy, whose lives are tightly interwoven with that of their hierarch.

A person becomes successful once they reach maturity.  However, maturity is not based on a period of time.  A person reaches maturity at the point in their life when they can honestly say that they are ready to take upon themselves the responsibility for their words and actions.  This maturity is followed by the realization that actions, words, and even thoughts can change not only one's own life, but also the lives of others.  Therefore today, we, your spiritual children, greet you as with this event that has so impacted your life.  This is not just a recollection of a former experience, but an event which you have lived for 49 years.  We ask Your Eminence, our dear Vladyko Antony, that you continue to take upon yourself the responsibility to guide, care for, and pray for each one of us.  We ask of God that we may continue to enjoy your example of service, mentorship, dedication, humility, and mostly life in Christ.  Axios, Vladyko!

It was with great joy that we celebrated the Divine Liturgy today at the St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary’s chapel.  The commemoration was made even greater by the presence and participation of Ukrainians, who are not only Ukrainian in words, but, in their actions.  Captain of the Second Rank Ihor Mykolayovych Trukhan, Captain of the Second Rank Serhiy Mykhailovych Karlash and Captain-Lieutenant Dmytro Lytvyn, all are Ukrainian servicemen based and trained in the United States, are active participants in the parish life of our Church.  Ukrainians who in 2014, during the military aggression and annexation of Crimea, remained faithful to their country, their oaths, and faithful to themselves.  These men show by their very example, that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for their friends.  With the blessing of Metropolitan Antony, Archbishop Daniel bestowed medals commemorating the Centennial of the founding of the UOC of USA upon the soldiers, expressing his gratitude for dedicating their lives to their Church and nation.  Axios, worthy Ukrainians!

The joy of today’s celebration was multiplied by the participation of many clergy including V. Rev. Vasyl Kryshtompol, Rev. Vasyl Pasakas, Rev. Vasyl Shak, Rev. Andrii Drapak, Rev. Mykola Zomchak and Rev. Ihor Protsak, their families, as well as the seminarians, each of whom congratulated Metropolitan Antony on his special day.  Archbishop Daniel greeted His Eminence, presenting him with a gift from himself and the Consistory - new set of vestments to honor the occasion.  In conclusion, Metropolitan Antony warmly thanked everyone for their participation, their warm wishes, and mostly for their prayers.
