PRESS RELEASE

The 20th Regular Sobor: “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

Just as about 6years ago, following the events of the 18th Regular Sobor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, on the first day of the 20th Regular SOBOR of the UOC of the USA, the faithful of the Church were leaving plenary sessions, stating:  “It was the Sobor I have waited for all my life – Christ centered and Spirit filled… The Sobor was witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit, vivifying, inspiring, embracing, clarifying, healing… I met so many gifted and devoted people who are ready to offer their services to God through our Holy Church… I actually feel that I am now part of a spontaneously created network of faithful people who fully comprehend that they have a ministry to fulfill.”  Such were the comments received by various members and staff of the Consistory since the close of the first day of the Church’s Sobor that virtually all its participants did not want to end.  This triennial event in the life of our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA – the gathering of faithful and clergy – to discuss in depth the progress of her various ministries and to set the course for the future direction of our ministry to save souls, is truly a spiritual and life-confirming moment for all of its participants, particularly under the theme:  “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

The Pre-Sobor Commission and the Consistory staff had made all the preparations and put the final touches on the meeting rooms.  The liturgical program was confirmed, the meal program was set and planning finalized for specific events. The Credentials Committee had prepared registration packets full of information about our Church center, our Church ministries and literally dozens of Ukrainian community and Orthodox organizations and their programs and activities.

On Thursday, 17 October, Sobor activity convened with the celebration of Divine Liturgy in St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church.  His Eminence Metropolitan Antony was principal celebrant of the Liturgy with His Grace Bishop Daniel concelebrating.  Clergy from all over the USA assisted.  The Metropolitan called down the Holy Spirit upon the gathering of the people of God and the presence of the Spirit was evident throughout the remainder of the first day of Sobor.

Following brunch the clergy and lay delegate, alternate and guest participants of the Sobor gathered in the rotunda and library of the Consistory building to prepare for the procession into the Sobor meeting room in the Ukrainian Cultural Center.  The people of God entered the Center carrying the sacred icon of the Pochaiv Mother of God and singing the traditional processional hymn, “O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance…” and the work assigned by God to those gathered began.

Once the congregation entered the Ukrainian Cultural Center of the Historical and Educational Complex of the UOC of the USA, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony offered Invocation, calling down the Grace of the Holy Spirit upon the participants of the Sacred Gathering – SOBOR. Once the chanting of the National Anthems of the United States of America and Ukraine concluded, the delegates of the SOBOR paid attention to a special treat – a video greeting of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople – Bartholomew I to the clergy and the delegates of the 20th Regular Sobor of the Church.

During his “State of the Church” remarks, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony defined the Sobor theme – “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” As a shepherd of souls, the Metropolitan led the clergy and lay delegates on a journey, which clearly pointed out the manifestations of that sacred mandate through the ministry of the entire Metropolia.

Following are excerpts from His Eminence’s comments: “Am I my brother’s keeper?  It is phrase found in Genesis 4:9, Cain had just murdered his brother Abel out of a jealousy to be God’s favorite. God, knowing full well what has happened asks Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”  Cain’s response was, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and it has become a catch phrase for the last 7000 years. It questions our degree of responsibility for anyone other than ourselves, even for family members like Cain’s brother. As we read through the pages of Scripture we begin to discover that there is a responsibility that we are entrusted with. Our Lord Jesus Christ used examples that said if we clothed anyone who was naked, visited anyone in prison, even just gave a cup of cool water in His name then it would be as if we had done it directly to Him. The love your neighbor commandment, the story of the Good Samaritan… all these infer that we are in some sense our brother’s keeper, even as he or she is our keeper. In a culture that breathes and exhales independence, that’s soaked in capitalism more than “community-ism”, we tend not to want others keeping watch over our souls much less the added responsibility of us having to care for them. As much as we may resist the idea that we are our brother’s keeper, in God’s eyes we MUST be our brother’s keeper.

When I sat down and got serious about what I wanted to say at the opening of this 20th Regular Sobor, I came across – in reading one of the Gospels of the day in the Orthodox Study Bible, which very often makes references in explanatory footnotes under the daily readings, makes references to other scripture sections that might be of assistance in illuminating the present reading – I came across Acts, chapter 11. The church leadership in Jerusalem has recently found out that Peter had gone to a Gentiles house in Caesarea, to a Roman centurions home no less. The first part of Acts 11 is Peter explaining all that had happened prior to that visit, how it led to he and six other Jews traveling north from Joppa to the Gentile Cornelius’s home and there to witness first-hand the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon these foreigners. It would seem from what happened there and immediately following it that this business of being our brother’s keeper has more to it than meets the eye.

When it comes to being your brother’s keeper you may find yourself going to places you not only have never been but to places that you never thought you could EVER be. That was exactly the case with Peter and his six Jewish friends as they entered Cornelius’ house that day. They hear a man they never thought could be spiritual describing a vision he had been blessed with of an angel directing him to send for Peter. Cornelius remembers being told to, “…call for Simon whose surname is Peter, who will tell you words by which you and all in your household will be saved.” A Gentile home, a Roman centurion, open hearts that eagerly want to know how to be right with God, the opportunity to speak the name of our Lord to people eager to hear it, this was a new place for these men. The whole household was all gathered there, I think that during this time the meaning of “household” was that children as well as men and women, as well as servants and other employees were present. Being your brothers or sisters keeper doesn’t have an age range or social class attached to it. It doesn’t have reference to sex or status.  It simply means being willing to go to a place you’ve never been before because they – your brothers and sisters, known or unknown to you – need you to, they need help and they need to know Jesus Christ through you.

Peter relates how he had just begun preaching to them the truth of who Jesus Christ is when all of a sudden God interrupted the sermon and the Holy Spirit descended upon the Gentile audience. Sometimes it’s like that when we are ministering to other – whether we be priests or laypersons, God interrupts us and in a second does what only He can do. It was Peter’s desire that these Caesarean Gentiles be accepted as good people. God’s desire is that they be built right into the church. Peter’s desire was that they needed to be taught to make sure their faith was genuine, God’s desire was to pour out the Holy Spirit upon them and let that be evidenced in an unmistakable way.

Although he was shocked by this turn of events, Peter says that he recalled the words that our Lord had said years before about they how they would all be baptized with the Holy Spirit. But, I like most what he said next, “If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God? – or how could I argue with God” To be their brother’s keeper especially when the brother was a Gentile was far from what they all desired as Jewish men and yet, here they were. “Who was I that I could argue with God?” I think those words may become our words as we better understand what being our brother’s keeper means and how it leads to a deeper faith in Christ.

"Am I my brother’s keeper?" as God asked Cain where Abel was. God’s answer to that specific question was loud and clear through Jesus Christ our Lord with a resounding “Yes!”  I am my brother’s keeper or guardian or protector. We are to be concerned about others because God was concerned about us through Christ and loved us so much that his Son died on a cross for our salvation.

There is, at least it seems to me, a total ignoring of the whole plan of salvation in any man (or woman )who says, “I am not going to have any responsibility about others,” – because the whole plan of salvation is based on the care of Another for us, on the sacrifice of Another for us; and the whole spirit of that plan is self-sacrifice and love to others. If you say, “I will not love”— “I am not my brother’s keeper”, well, you renounce the whole plan of salvation, if you will not love your neighbor as yourself, therefore you cannot have Love’s blessing. If you will not love you cannot be saved by Love; and if you believe that the Christian faith leaves you unloving and selfish and yet can still take you to heaven, you have made a mistake. There is no such religion propagated by the Word of God, for the Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that since Christ has so loved us we are therefore to love one another, to love those we might consider to be ungodly (like the Gentiles in Caesarea) - so as to strive to bring them to the feet of the Savior like Lazarus’ sister Mary. My prayer is that God grant that these words may have a beneficial effect through the Holy Spirit inspiring them to your souls.

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all  your mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”  This is often misinterpreted, as noted in the Orthodox Study Bible to read “you shall love your neighbor as you love yourself”, which destroys the force of the statement.  How much we love ourselves is not the standard by which Christ our Lord is calling us to love others.  Rather, we are called to love our neighbor as being of the same nature as we ourselves are, as being created in God’s image and likeness, just as we are…as the Church Fathers teach, we find our true self in loving our neighbor – in “keeping” our brother or our sister.

Following the appointment of the Sobor chair persons - Very Rev, Fr. John Nakonechny, a pastor of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma, OH and Dr. Paul Micevych of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles, CA, as well as Sobor secretaries, a parliamentarian, the working session of the Sobor brought everyone’s attention to the report of the President of the Consistory of the UOC of the USA His Grace Bishop Daniel.

While presenting his report, Bishop Daniel called upon the Directors of the Consistory Offices of Ministry, whose reports were already included in the Sobor reports packet sent to the delegates in advance of the Sobor.  The bishop wanted the Sobor participants to be able to put a face to the reports and thus, introduced the Directors, who made necessary additions to their reports and answered questions from the Sobor:  Very Rev. Bazyl Zawierucha – Office of External Affairs and Interchurch Relations; Rev. Fr. Ivan Synevskyy – Office of Public Relations and Publications; Protodeacon Dr. Ihor Mahlay – Office of Missions and Christian Charity; Natalie Kapeluck-Nixon – Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry; Rev. Fr. Harry Linzinbigler – Office of Religious Education; Rev. Fr. Vasyl Sendeha - Office of Adult and Family Ministry; Dr. Michael Andrec – Office of the Archive and Historical Information; and Very Rev. Fr. Timothy Tomson – Office of Clergy Development, etc.

In the conclusion of his remarks, Bishop Daniel stated: “With the theme of this SOBOR we are tasked to reflect upon the last three years of our Church’s ministry/service in the world of constant changes and challenges. It is here and now that all of us, as stewards of Christ’s Church must honestly ask of ourselves – AM I MY BROTHER’S  KEEPER? Are we?

The theme of the present 20th Triennial Clergy-Laity SOBOR of our Holy Metropolia provides us with more than a slogan for our gathering. It constitutes a summons, a divinely-spoken directive that we are called to follow in view of where we come from, what we are and where we are destined by God to go.

For years we have been organizing our communities, providing educational, worshipping, and philanthropic opportunities for our members, building beautiful Churches, Community Centers and Schools for our own use. This has been a natural course to follow as we tried to assert ourselves and to establish ourselves firmly as a significant entity and agent within the American society.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Community in its first years of existence, in its first generation, was a community with a hundred percent participation of all of its members in the various activities of the church. From the youngest child in a Parish to its oldest member, people were always present as whole families in liturgical, educational and philanthropic events of the Church. The Church in the specific form of the parish, was the natural center where the community would gather, especially during the very difficult years of adaptation and survival in the new country where the heroic first immigrants, the true pioneers found themselves.

With the passing of the years and the appearance of the second generation, the third, the fourth and now even the fifth generation, things gradually started to change. A new reality began to emerge, having the following characteristics:

a) First, in spite of the continuous phenomenon of immigration, our Church is by no means any longer a Church of immigrants, or an ecclesiastical entity of the Diaspora, but a Church which is naturally, firmly and proudly rooted in the American soil. This means that the Church in our days is no longer preoccupied with the issue of the socio-economic survival of its immigrant members in a new country. Clearly new conditions have been created. We are no longer the Church of immigrants… we are a Church of Christ that is in a position to completely and intensely focus in promoting the Orthodox Faith and in cultivating the universal human values.

b) Secondly, there exists no longer a full homogeneity-likeness in our Communities, the way it existed among the first immigrant communities. Today there is a certain difference between first generation immigrants and fourth generation Ukrainian-Americans. Also, the constantly increasing number of interfaith marriages has caused a change in the composition of the membership of the Church. A typical, well organized Parish of our Metropolia, presents an internal differentiation because of the difference in terms of levels of generations from first to fifth and of ethnic and even religious origin of several of its members.

c) Thirdly, in the present new reality of the Church, there is a serious problem with the youth. A certain number of High School, College and University students, and young adults, which means the people from 16 to 35 years of age, are somehow disconnecting themselves from the Church and her life. This is a phenomenon occurring in all major religious Communities in the USA, but its general character does not diminish the fact that it constitutes a sad phenomenon, a major problem, and a grave concern for us.

d) Fourthly, there is a new reality in the religious landscape of contemporary America. This is the existence of the 60 million people characterized as “un-churched”. These people are not atheists at all. They are individuals who for various reasons are not connected with any Church or organized religious body. Many were connected but at some point left their religious community. Others were never related to any religious body at all.

The above observations help us understand the importance of the theme of the present SOBOR: “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

We are no longer a Church community looking for survival. Such an understanding of ourselves belongs to the past. We cannot be a self-centered, self-enclosed Ukrainian Orthodox ecclesiastical body, limited to itself and directing its energy exclusively within itself. God calls us to gather His people. In order to gather God’s people we have to go out, to look for them, to search places and find them and lead them to God’s home. TO BE OUR BROTHERS KEEPRS… The theme of the SOBOR calls us: to reach out, to move out and start gathering the souls who look for a spiritual home, for a living community and ultimately for a communion with God. How can we respond to such a sacred call?

Our response starts with a question: Who are the specific people to whom God sends us to care for and to share with them the treasures of a life giving faith? Are we to wait for them in our parish churches…. Just sit and wait for their appearance?

Building the buildings is not enough. We must fill them with life and activity. We still do not have enough quality clergy to serve all the people who attend the parishes of our Metropolia, let alone reach out to those who have drifted away from them. While seven seminarians is a wonderful accomplishment, it won't fill the growing shortage being caused by the demands for dedicated messengers of the Word of God. Where will those clergy come from? It won't be from parishes where young people are drifting away, or from parishes without dynamic programming. It won't be from the role models of clergy who are too exhausted to put in that extra time for the youth group because they spent the whole day attending to other things in life. They must come from parishes that are filled with the Spirit of God and alive in Christ.

This is a time when our Church should be doing more to build up the body of Christ, to serve her people. After all WE ARE OUR BROTHERS KEPPERS…. The measure of our progress as a Church today will not be construction of new buildings, and the amounts of dollar bills in parish treasuries for a so called “tough” days. We have a far more challenging task: caring for the people in the parishes, which is a much more difficult "building program," but a far more rewarding one – after all – it is mandated by Christ.

Without a strong liturgical life, our parishes would be little more than community centers, like we might find run by our local cities and towns: places for people to gather for a few hours in order to play bingo or learn a new recipe. The Orthodox Church is a worshipping Church; our liturgical and sacramental life is the key to our self-understanding. And so we must focus on strengthening our worship, both in practice but also in our knowledge of it.

AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?.... I want to be one…. But it cannot just be an empty saying. The meaning and action must be put into that expression. While our society and the world around us may be trying to get us to believe that this is a time when it's "every man for himself," our Faith and our Church tells us that God has composed the body so "that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together" (I Corinthians 12: 25-26).

So, how do we come as a Church of Christ to positively answer the question of this Sobor’s Logo? Someone recently asked me, what is your vision for the Church… There is no my vision, there is no my way or Metropolitan’s way of preaching and living the Word of God. I am a shepherd of Christ calling His sheep to live and act in Christ. As a Church of Christ, we have no right to exist in a so-called maintenance mode from year to year, from day to day, etc.. We are to be realistic about the mandate of Christ, yet mindful of our abilities and present circumstances.

A few minutes ago I stated that we are no longer the Church of first generation of immigrants; we are no longer the Church of 20s, 40s, 80s and even 90s. We have been blessed by the Lord in so many ways, but now we must accept responsibly the torch of Faith of our forefathers and confidently look forward in the eyes of the present and future. You see, the stronger the parishes of our Metropolia are, the healthier the Metropolia is…

We are certainly at a challenging time in the life of our Church. The economic situation has brought many of them to light - and is obligating us to face them directly. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the challenges. It is easy to become depressed or negative about our future. We should recall that immediately after the crucifixion of our Lord, the disciples hid themselves, because they were afraid. I would suspect that they figured their movement was over. However, in death and apparent defeat, our Lord triumphed by rising from the dead and destroying the forces of darkness. As we proclaimed at our Paschal vigil: "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee before him! As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before fire, let the wicked perish before God" (Ps. 67:1-2). When we light our paschal candles, a simple act that we do every time we enter a church, we proclaim our faith that God's light - the light of Christ's resurrection - cannot be overcome by darkness - it does not fade and cannot be extinguished.

Brothers and sisters, there is much work to do in the coming days, months, and years. The Lord invites us as a Church and as a Metropolia to move forward, and to put away any sense that we have already accomplished all that we need to do. Our times require that we listen to the commands of the Lord to meet the needs of our families and our communities at large. It is our task to add new dynamic approach to the ministry of our Metropolia and strengthen its life for them. We must aspire to reach higher than we have before so that it would please the Lord to say to us, "I know your works" (Revelation 3:8).”

The Director of the Office of Financial Affairs, Emil Skocypec presented a complete financial report with detailed graphs exhibiting the receipt and utilization of all funds contributed to or earned by our Church.  He satisfactorily responded to all questions from the Sobor delegates and forcefully put across the message that our financial condition needs much, much improvement if we hope to continue the multitude of ministry programs we have developed, in addition to maintaining the vast complex, which is our Metropolia Center.  Mr. Skocypec was very forthright in stating that our income MUST be increased to avoid continuous operation in the red.  The Metropolitan of the Church has always resolutely proclaimed that “the Lord will provide” and He always has, but we need to be proactive on our own in meeting our problems head-on.  He expressed his deepest gratitude to the Assistant Director of the Office, Natalia Honcharenko, who has always done a most extensive and accurate job in keeping and reporting our financial affairs. Following a discussion, a motion was made to increase the annual Diocesan Contribution to $100 from each parishioner of the UOC of the USA.

The day concluded with a formal banquet of the SOBOR, during which the delegates were treated to Video presentations about the life of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary; ministry of the Orphanage Adoption program of the Metropolia and the newly released promotional video about the ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox League.

The delegates of the Church’ Sobor welcomed among their midst His  Grace Bishop Sevastianos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, who presented greeting of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, who was not able to attend the banquet program due to the Holy Synod Session which took place during the same week.  Video presentations were presented about our Church’s Orphanage Adoption Program,
St. Sophia Seminary graduation ceremonies and the Ukrainian Orthodox League.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement by the Council of Bishops of a new award program called THE GREAT BENEFACTOR – BLAHODIYNYKY – OF OUR HOLY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH.  This award was created to honor individual members, clergy or laity, of the Church whose lifetime contributions to the welfare of the Church and her faithful – contributions of any nature, including the giving of oneself in service to the extension of God’s Kingdom on earth are exemplary.  The award will be made annually to at least one and no more than five individuals whose devotion and commitment would be obvious to any member of the Church.

Five recipients for the 2013 awards were identified and introduced, if present at the Sobor.  They were awarded a beautiful medallion bearing the likeness of St. Andrew, the First-Called Apostle and founder of Christ’s Church in Ukraine and the words:  “Great Benefactor and Blahodiynyk”.  The recipients will always be identified with the legacy of St. Andrew, as engraved on the back of the medallion as those who: “CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF ST. ANDREW THE FIRST CALLED APOSTLE” in the demostration of their faith in god, their unwavering devotion to the body of Christ, their preservation of the holy traditions of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Such is the case with the five recipients this evening.

The second day of Sobor began with the Divine Liturgy at St. Andrew Memorial Church, with Very Rev. Fr. John Harvey, Dean o Penn-Ohio Deanery of Western Eparchy of the Church presiding at he service with about 20 clergy of local parishes and deaneries concelebrating. The entire day on Friday, 18 October was devoted to Sobor Committee meetings in various meeting rooms at the Holiday Inn and at the Center.  The committees included:  Church Ministries, Missions, Seminary, History and Education Complex, Education, Publications, Parish Rejuvenation and Development, New Immigration Issues, Interchurch Relations, Finance, Stewardship, Resolutions, Nominations and Constitution.  Each of the delegates to the Sobor was asked to participate in at least two committee discussions – one in the morning and the second in the afternoon.  The discussion in each was lively and thorough with each committee preparing a report to be presented to the Sobor plenary session with resolutions, motions and resolutions concerning the committee’s area of interest.  The delegates bear the responsibility of taking these reports back to their parishes and sharing them with their parish membership and encouraging them to act in support of the decisions made by the Sobor.  The reports will also be sent to all parishes as part of the Sobor minutes – the official record of the Sobor.

In upcoming articles in the UOW, we will discuss the decisions, recommendations and resolutions of the Sobor committees, as adopted by the Sobor, with the hope that the general Church membership will become more familiar with the work, which must be accomplished over the next three years.  The Directors of the various Consistory Offices of Ministry will be asked to submit written thoughts with regard to these articles to Metropolitan Antony for inclusion in the new Digital Form of the Ukrainian Orthodox Word and on the Church’s website. One of the most important decisions made under the committee reports – because of financial necessity – was to discontinue the hard-copy publication of the Ukrainian Orthodox Word and move to digital publication.  Parishes will be asked to print out this copy for those members who are computer illiterate, shut-ins, etc.

A workshop/seminar entitled: “The Role of Women in the Orthodox Church” was presented by PhD student Carry Frost of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Charlottesville, VA and Presbytera Kyriaky Fitzegerald of Holy Cross School of Theology, Brookline, MA. It was a fascinating topic for the audience and presented studies so new that they have not been fully presented by theologians. The program had to be concluded interrupting the discussion because of the late hour. Following the presentations, the participants of the 4th Youth Sobor of the Church guided the clergy and delegates of the Church’s Sobor through a Prayer Trail Walk, reflecting upon the themw of the Sobor, while guiding everyone in attendance to the Three Holy hierarchs Chapel of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary. Late in the evening hours of the day, His Grace Bishop Daniel welcomed about 150 visitors to the Seminary’s chapel, reflecting upon the person’s response to the question of the SOBOR – “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

Saturday morning, as every other single day of Sobor’s activities began with the Divine Liturgy, served by His Grace Bishop Daniel with the Deans and clergy of New York/New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic Deaneries. Most of the morning hours of Sobor sessions were dedicated to the conclusion remarks from various Committees, finalizing their reports. As per UOC of USA’s Constitution a new Council of Metropolia was elected from among the delegates of the 20th Regular Sobor.

Towards the end the of the plenary session, representatives of the 4th Annual Youth SOBOR of the UOC of the USA addressed the delegates of the 20th Regular Sobor, offering their remarks and reflections, addressing the needs and pastoral challenges of the Youth and Young Adult Life.

The official Plenary Session of the Church’s 20th Regular Sobor concluded on Saturday afternoon, inviting the remaining guest of the Metropolia Center to visit St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary for an exclusive tour of the property, learning about the ministry of the Church’s Theological school.

Sunday morning. October 20, 2013 brought about 300 faithful of the Church to St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ for a Sunday Divine Liturgy, marking the formal conclusion of the 20th Regular SOBOR.  Children of St. Andrew School of Religion and Ukrainian Studies, members of Pokrova Sisterhood and pastor of St. Andrew Memorial Church – Very Rev. Yuriy Siwko welcomed Metropolitan Antony and Bishop Daniel to the Church’s main sacred temple, a place of beginning of Archpastoral ministry of Metropolitan Antony and Priestly ministry of Bishop Daniel. The choir of St. Andrew Memorial Church under the leadership of Maestro Michael Andrec chanted responses. During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Daniel ordained Subdeacon Theophan Mackey, a parishioner of St. Anthony of the Desert Ukrainian Orthodox Mission in Las Cruses, NM and Church’s seminarian to Holy Deaconate.

At the conclusion of the Liturgy a beautiful icon, entitled “The South Bound Brook Icon of the Offering of First-Fruits” was blessed by the Bishops as the beginning of a campaign to educate our faithful about the necessity of offering to God the first portion of our income on a regular basis, as opposed to what is left over in the end.  The icon was the gift of iconographer Cheryl Pituch, her husband Eugene and his three brothers, Gregory, Gary and Stephen in memory of their parents Eugene and Julia Pituch, lifelong members of Protection of the Mother of God Parish, Arnold, PA, who were active and vital members of the Ukrainian Orthodox League and supporters of the teenage camping programs.  This icon will hang permanently in the rotunda of the Consistory and will be reproduced for utilization and presentation in educational programs that will be conducted in our Deaneries by the Office of Stewardship and Development in the coming year.

The 20th Regular Sobor came to conclusion after a wonderful traditional farewell brunch in the Ukrainian Cultural Center following Divine Liturgy.  The participants and many guests from Church services enjoyed one last opportunity to share thoughts about what they learned during the Sobor and how they might work together to ensure that what they decided at the Sobor came to fruition.  The hierarchs expressed their sincere gratitude to all who participated in the Sobor and urged vigilance in building up their local communities and reaching out to the world around them with the message of Christ’s Gospel – by living lives reflective of His Love and willingly being their brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.
