On the final Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Great and Holy Lent, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA gathered prayerfully at the spiritual heart of our Church - the sacred grounds of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, New Jersey - to participate in the solemn and deeply moving celebration of the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

Presiding over the service was His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, who stood at the holy altar as the chief celebrant, joined in concelebration by Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of the parish, along with Protodeacon Pavlo Vysotskyi, Deacon Andrii Akulenko, and the seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, whose prayerful chanting lifted the hearts of all present.

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, uniquely offered during Great Lent, is not simply a service - it is a spiritual encounter with the living Christ in the midst of our fasting, repentance, and longing. Unlike the festive Divine Liturgy, it bears a tone of stillness, reverence, and yearning.

As the choir intoned the sacred hymn:“Let my prayer arise as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice…” the faithful stood in awe, many with bowed heads and tear-filled eyes.

In his homily, Archbishop Daniel reflected: “When the Church places these words upon our lips, she teaches us that prayer is not merely spoken - it must rise. It must ascend from the depths of a contrite heart. Like incense, it is purified through fire - through struggle, repentance, and humility.”

He continued: “The fragrance of incense is not for God - for God needs nothing - but for us. It reminds us that a life lived in prayer becomes beautiful before the Lord. Each act of forgiveness, each moment of patience, each tear of repentance becomes a sweet offering before His heavenly throne.”

During this sacred service, numerous faithful approached the Holy Mysteries of Confession and Holy Communion, preparing themselves to encounter the Risen Christ. The quiet movement of penitents, the whispered prayers, and the reception of the Eucharist revealed a Church alive - a people journeying from darkness to light, from brokenness to healing.

Archbishop Daniel reminded all: “Communion is not a ritual - it is life. To receive the Body and Blood of Christ is to receive strength for the journey. It is Christ Himself entering our weakness and transforming it into grace. Stay close to Him - not only in moments of peace, but especially in moments of struggle.”

Later that same day, Archbishop Daniel, accompanied by the seminarians, traveled to St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City, where the faithful of the greater New York area gathered for the Holy Mystery of Unction.

Welcoming the archpastor were Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Muzychka, pastor of the cathedral, along with Very Rev. Fr. Ioan Protesa of St. Andrei Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Jamaica, NY, and Very Rev. Fr. Vitaliy Pavlykivsky of All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church in New York City.

Together, clergy and faithful entered into one of the most profound healing mysteries of the Orthodox Church.

The Mystery of Holy Unction is not merely about physical healing - it is a restoration of the entire human person: body, mind, and soul.

Drawing from the Epistle of St. James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church… and the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.” (James 5:14–15)

Archbishop Daniel spoke with pastoral depth: “In the world, doctors use medicine to treat the body - and this is a blessing from God. But in the Church, Christ Himself is the Physician of our souls and bodies. Through the Holy Mysteries, He touches not only our wounds - but the very source of our brokenness.”

He reflected on the biblical symbolism of oil and wine: “The oil we receive is not ordinary - it is sanctified by prayer, just as the wine and oil used by the Good Samaritan were instruments of mercy. Christ calls us to be both the wounded and the healer - to receive His grace, and to offer it to others.”

Over one hundred faithful approached to receive the anointing with holy oil, marked on their foreheads, hands, and senses - each cross traced as a sign of Christ’s healing presence.

The seminarians’ chanting once again filled the cathedral, transforming the space into a living prayer. Their voices carried the petitions of the Church: “Heal Your servants, O Lord, from every sickness of soul and body…”

Archbishop Daniel urged the faithful: “Great Lent is not simply about what we give up - it is about what we allow God to restore within us. Examine your conscience. Look honestly at your life - not with fear, but with hope. For every wound you uncover, Christ is ready to heal.”

At the conclusion of the service, Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Muzychka, with visible emotion, addressed the faithful: “With tears in my eyes, I thank God for this day. I thank His Eminence Archbishop Daniel for his love, his leadership, and his fatherly care. And I thank all of you - our parish family - who have walked this Lenten journey together. You are the living Church.”

As the services concluded, what remained was not simply memory - but transformation.

The Church Fathers remind us:

St. John Chrysostom: “Prayer is the light of the soul - it illuminates the darkness within us.”

St. Ephraim the Syrian: “Repentance is the ship, fasting is the sea, and almsgiving is the harbor - through them we journey to salvation.”

St. Basil the Great: “A true fast is the estrangement from evil, the control of the tongue, the laying aside of anger.”

In the spirit of these teachings, Archbishop Daniel offered a final exhortation: “Beloved in Christ - do not let Lent pass you by as a season. Let it become your transformation. Let your prayer rise. Let your wounds be healed. Let your heart be renewed. And when the radiant night of Pascha comes - do not simply celebrate the Resurrection. Become witnesses of it.”

Великопосні миті покаяння, зцілення і надії

У останню середу шостого тижня Великого і Святого Посту вірні Української Православної Церкви США молитовно зібралися у духовному осередку нашої Церкви - на священних теренах Української Православної церкви-памʼятника Святого Андрія Українського Первозванного у Саут-Баунд-Бруку, Нью-Джерсі - щоб взяти участь у глибоко зворушливому богослужінні Божественної Літургії Напередосвячених Дарів.

Очолив богослужіння Його Високопреосвященство Архієпископ Даниїл, як головний служитель при святому престолі, у співслужінні з протоієреєм Василем Пасакасом, настоятелем парафії та протодияконом Павлом Висоцьким, дияконом Андрієм Акуленком та семінаристами Свято-Софіївської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії, чий молитовний спів підносив серця всіх присутніх.

Літургія Передосвячених Дарів, яка звершується лише у час Великого Посту, є не просто богослужінням - це живе духовне пережиття зустрічі з Христом серед посту, покаяння і глибокого внутрішнього прагнення.

Коли хор заспівав священний гімн: «Нехай піднесеться молитва моя, як кадило перед Тобою, піднесення рук моїх - як жертва вечірня…» вірні стояли у благоговінні, багато з опущеними головами та сльозами на очах.

У своєму слові Архієпископ Даниїл наголосив: «Коли Церква вкладає ці слова у наші уста, вона навчає нас, що молитва - це не лише слова. Вона повинна підноситися. Вона має сходити з глибини сокрушеного серця. Подібно до кадила, вона очищується вогнем - через боротьбу, покаяння і смирення».

Він продовжив: «Пахощі кадила не для Бога - бо Бог нічого не потребує - а для нас. Вони нагадують, що життя, прожите в молитві, стає прекрасним перед Господом. Кожен акт прощення, кожна мить терпіння, кожна сльоза покаяння стає солодкою жертвою перед Його небесним престолом».

Під час цього богослужіння численні вірні приступили до Святих Таїнств Сповіді та Причастя, готуючи себе до зустрічі з Воскреслим Христом. Тиха хода покаяння, шепіт молитов і прийняття Євхаристії засвідчили живу Церкву - народ, що переходить від темряви до світла, від зраненості до зцілення.

Архієпископ Даниїл підкреслив: «Причастя - це не обряд, це життя. Приймаючи Тіло і Кров Христові, ми отримуємо силу для нашого шляху. Сам Христос входить у нашу неміч і перетворює її на благодать. Будьте близько до Нього - не лише в хвилини миру, але особливо в часи боротьби».

Того ж дня Архієпископ Даниїл разом із семінаристами прибув до Свято-Володимирського Українського Православного Кафедрального собору у Нью-Йорку, де вірні Великого Нью-Йорка зібралися на Таїнство Єлеопомазання.

Архіпастиря зустріли протоієрей Володимир Музичка, настоятель собору, разом із духовенством: о. Іоаном Протесою (парафія Св. Андрія, Джамайка, Нью-Йорк) та протоієреєм Віталієм Павликівським (Українська Православна парафія Всіх Святих, Нью-Йорк).

Разом духовенство і вірні ввійшли у одне з найглибших зцілюючих Таїнств Церкви.

Таїнство Єлеопомазання - це не лише про фізичне оздоровлення, але про відновлення всієї людини: тіла, душі й розуму.

Згідно зі словами апостола Якова: «Чи хворіє хто з вас - нехай покличе пресвітерів Церкви… і молитва віри спасе недужого, і Господь його підніме» (Як. 5:14–15).

Архієпископ Даниїл зазначив: «У світі лікарі використовують ліки для зцілення тіла - і це благословення Боже. Але в Церкві Сам Христос є Лікарем душ і тіл наших. Через Святі Таїнства Він торкається не лише наших ран, але й самого джерела нашої зламаності».

Роздумуючи над символікою оливи і вина, він сказав: «Єлей, який ми приймаємо, - не звичайний. Він освячений молитвою, як і олива та вино, якими Милосердний Самарянин лікував пораненого. Христос кличе нас бути і пораненими, і тими, хто зцілює - приймати благодать і передавати її іншим».

Понад сто вірних приступили до помазання святим єлеєм, отримуючи благословення як знак зцілюючої присутності Христа.

Спів семінаристів знову наповнив храм, перетворюючи його на живу молитву: «Зціли, Господи, рабів Твоїх від усякої немочі душевної і тілесної…»

Архієпископ Даниїл закликав: «Великий Піст - це не лише про те, від чого ми відмовляємося. Це про те, що Бог відновлює в нас. Досліджуйте своє сумління. Дивіться на своє життя чесно - не зі страхом, а з надією. Бо кожну рану, яку ви відкриєте, Христос готовий зцілити».

На завершення богослужіння о. Володимир Музичка, зворушений до сліз, звернувся до вірних: «Зі сльозами на очах дякую Богові за цей день. Дякую Владиці Даниїлу за його любов, провід і батьківську турботу. І дякую всім вам - нашій парафіяльній родині - за те, що ми разом пройшли цей шлях Великого Посту. Ви - жива Церква».

Після завершення богослужінь залишилося не лише спогад - але переміна серця.

Святі Отці навчають:

Св. Іоан Золотоустий: «Молитва є світлом душі - вона просвітлює внутрішню темряву».

Св. Єфрем Сирін: «Покаяння - це корабель, піст - море, а милостиня - пристань».

Св. Василій Великий: «Справжній піст - це віддалення від зла, приборкання язика і відкинення гніву».

У дусі цих слів Архієпископ Даниїл завершив: «Возлюблені у Христі - не дозвольте Посту пройти повз вас як сезон. Нехай він стане вашим преображенням. Нехай ваша молитва підноситься. Нехай ваші рани зцілюються. Нехай ваше серце оновлюється. І коли засяє ніч Пасхи - не лише святкуйте Воскресіння. Станьте його свідками».
