As the Church entered the sacred days of the Great and Holy Lent, the faithful of Saint Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church gathered in prayerful anticipation for the first celebration of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of the season. Presiding over this profoundly contemplative service was Archbishop Daniel, who led the clergy and faithful into the depth and stillness that characterize the Lenten journey.

This first Presanctified Liturgy of the sacred year marked not only a liturgical beginning but also a renewed call to repentance, fasting, prayer, and deeper communion with Christ.

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is among the most ancient and spiritually rich services of the Orthodox Church. Traditionally attributed to Gregory the Dialogist, this service is celebrated on weekdays of Great Lent, when the Church refrains from offering the full Eucharistic Liturgy in order to preserve its festal character.

Yet, in her pastoral wisdom, the Church does not leave her children without spiritual nourishment. During the Presanctified Liturgy, the faithful receive Holy Communion from the Gifts consecrated on the previous Sunday. This beautifully expresses a central Lenten truth: even in fasting, Christ feeds His people.

The atmosphere of the service - quiet, reverent, filled with prostrations and solemn chanting - invites the soul into inner watchfulness and humility before God.

In his homily, Archbishop Daniel offered a deeply pastoral reflection on the meaning of fasting and prayer, emphasizing that fasting is never an end in itself.

“The Church does not ask us to fast in order to become weak,” Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful, “but to become attentive - to God, to one another, and to the hunger of the soul that only Christ can satisfy.”

He spoke of fasting as a discipline of love, one that frees the heart from excess so it may be filled with grace. Drawing on the wisdom of the Church Fathers, he echoed the spirit of St. John Chrysostom, who teaches that true fasting is inseparable from mercy, forgiveness, and care for others.

“When we restrain ourselves from food,” the Archbishop said, “we learn to feed others - by compassion, by patience, by acts of mercy. This is how fasting becomes Eucharistic.”

He further reminded the faithful that the Presanctified Liturgy reveals the Church’s maternal care: even as she calls her children to ascetic struggle, she nourishes them with the very Body and Blood of Christ, so that no one walks the desert of Lent alone.

Assisting Archbishop Daniel at the Holy Altar were Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Shak, pastor of St. Panteleimon Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Brooklyn, Protodeacon Pavlo Vysotskyi and Deacon Andrii Akulenko of Saint Andrew Memorial Church.

The liturgical responses were prayerfully chanted by seminarians of Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, under the leadership of Reader Marian Meleshko. Their reverent chanting added depth and beauty to the service, drawing the congregation into the sacred rhythm of repentance and hope.

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, a warm and personal moment unfolded as Archbishop Daniel offered heartfelt birthday greetings to Deacon Andrii Akulenko. Reflecting on his spiritual roots and upbringing in Ukraine, the Archbishop spoke of the example of faith received from his parents - an inheritance now offered back to the Church through faithful service.

“Your ministry,” Archbishop Daniel shared, “is a continuation of the prayers of your parents and the faith of your ancestors. Remain steadfast, humble, and joyful in serving Christ and His Holy Church.”

He concluded with prayers for perseverance, wisdom, and many blessed years of service to God and His people.

The first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts at Saint Andrew Memorial Church became a living icon of the Lenten path itself: quiet yet powerful, ascetical yet nourishing, somber yet filled with hope.

As the faithful departed into the evening, hearts were reminded that Great Lent is not merely about what we give up - but about Who we receive. Strengthened by prayer, fasting, and the Presanctified Gifts, the community continues its journey toward Pascha, trusting that Christ Himself walks with them every step of the way.

З початком святих днів Великого і Святого посту вірні храму святого Андрія Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника зібралися в молитовному очікуванні на перше в цьому постовому періоді звершення Літургії Напередосвячених Дарів. Це глибоко споглядальне богослужіння очолив Архієпископ Даниїл, який повів духовенство та вірних у глибину й тишу, що є характерними для великопісної дороги.

Ця перша Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів у святому році стала не лише літургійним початком, але й оновленим закликом до покаяння, посту, молитви та глибшого єднання з Христом.

Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів належить до найдавніших і духовно найбагатших богослужінь Православної Церкви. За переданням, її укладення приписують святителю Григорію Двоєслову. Вона звершується у будні дні Великого посту, коли Церква утримується від повного звершення Євхаристійної Літургії, зберігаючи її святковий характер.

Водночас у своїй пастирській мудрості Церква не залишає своїх дітей без духовної поживи. Під час Літургії Напередосвячених Дарів вірні причащаються Святих Дарів, освячених у попередню неділю. У цьому прекрасно відкривається одна з головних істин посту: навіть у стриманості Христос годує Свій народ.

Атмосфера богослужіння - тиха, благоговійна, наповнена земними поклонами та стриманим співом - запрошує душу до внутрішньої пильності та смирення перед Богом.

У своєму слові Архієпископ Даниїл запропонував глибоко пастирське осмислення значення посту й молитви, наголосивши, що піст ніколи не є самоціллю.

«Церква не закликає нас постити для того, щоб ми стали слабкими, - нагадав Архієпископ Даниїл вірним, - але щоб ми стали уважнішими - до Бога, одне до одного і до голоду душі, який може наситити лише Христос».

Він говорив про піст як про дисципліну любові, яка звільняє серце від надмірностей, щоб воно могло наповнитися благодаттю. Спираючись на мудрість Отців Церкви, Владика перегукувався з духом святителя Іоана Золотоустого, який навчає, що справжній піст нерозривно пов’язаний з милосердям, прощенням і турботою про ближніх.

«Коли ми стримуємо себе від їжі, - зазначив Архієпископ, - ми вчимося годувати інших - співчуттям, терпінням, ділами милосердя. Так піст стає євхаристійним».

Він також нагадав вірним, що Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів відкриває материнську турботу Церкви: закликаючи своїх дітей до аскетичної боротьби, вона водночас живить їх самим Тілом і Кров’ю Христа, щоб ніхто не проходив пустелю посту на самоті.

Архієпископу Даниїлу при Святому Престолі співслужили всечесніший отець Василь Шак, настоятель парафії святого великомученика і цілителя Пантелеймона Української Православної Церкви в Брукліні, протодиякон Павло Висоцький та диякон Андрій Акуленко з храму святого Андрія Первозванного Духовного осередку Митрополії.

Молитовні піснеспіви богослужіння виконували семінаристи Свято-Софійської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії під проводом читця Мар’яна Мелешка. Їхній благоговійний спів додав службі глибини та краси, вводячи громаду у священний ритм покаяння й надії.

Наприкінці Літургії Архієпископ Даниїл щиро привітав диякона Андрія з днем народження. Роздумуючи над його духовним корінням і вихованням в Україні, Владика згадав приклад віри, отриманий від батьків, - спадщину, яка сьогодні повертається Церкві через вірне служіння.

«Твоє служіння, - промовив Архієпископ Даниїл, - є продовженням молитов твоїх батьків і віри твоїх предків. Залишайся стійким, смиренним і радісним у служінні Христу та Його Святій Церкві».

Він завершив свої слова молитвою за витривалість, мудрість і многії благословенні літа служіння Богові та Його народові.

Перша Літургія Напередосвячених Дарів у храмі святого Андрія стала живою іконою самої великопісної дороги: тихої, але могутньої; аскетичної, але живильної; стриманої, але сповненої надії.

Розходячись у вечірню тишу, вірні ще раз усвідомили, що Великий піст - це не лише про те, від чого ми відмовляємося, але насамперед про Того, Кого ми приймаємо. Укріплені молитвою, постом і Напередосвяченими Дарами, громада продовжує свою дорогу до Пасхи, з довірою, що Сам Христос іде з ними на кожному кроці.
